The Vectormune® AI poultry vaccine is based on a Marek's Disease virus strain FC-126 (HVT FC-126), which is a non-pathogenic serotype of turkey herpesvirus (HVT), which is commonly used as a vaccine strain. The recombinant, modified virus expresses the H5 subtype of the hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the Avian Influenza virus (AIV). The vaccine is expected to confer protection to Avian influenza, which is a major respiratory disease in poultry.

The biological agent, called rHVT / AI, contains a recombinant turkey herpesvirus (HVT), which expresses the hemagglutinin (HA) protein (H5 subtype) of the Avian Influenza virus (AIV). The HA gene is under control of the Cytomegalovirus promoter and was inserted into an intergenic non-coding region of the HVT genome.
The inserted donor DNA fragment was obtained through amplifying the HA gene (H5 subtype) from the single-stranded RNA genome of the AIV using polymerase reverse transcriptase (RT-PCR) chain reaction. The AIV HA gene is expected to be expressed in several recombinants. This gene is also used in a similar avian yaws-influenza vector vaccine, which is licensed by the USDA.
