The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1962 by FAO and WHO to develop food standards and related texts such as codes of practice under the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme. The main purposes of this Programme are protecting the health of consumers and ensuring fair practices in the food trade, and promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods derived from Biotechnology was re-established by the decision of the 27th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in 2004 and is to accomplish its work within the five-year period.
The Task Force, at its Sixth Session, will discuss the following texts:
• Proposed Draft Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Animals (CL 2006/27-FBT); and
• Proposed Draft Annex (scoping document) to the Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Plants: Food Safety Assessment of Food Derived from Recombinant-DNA Plants Modified for Nutritional or Health Benefit (CX/FBT 06/6/5).
The Provisional Agenda and working documents of the Sixth Session of the Task Force Biotechnology (to be held in Chiba, Japan, 27 November – 1 December 2006) is available from the Codex website: http://www.codexalimentarius.net/
The Codex Alimentarius Commission, through the work of the Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods derived from Biotechnology (1999-2003), developed and adopted one risk analysis document “Principles for the Risk Analysis of Foods derived from Modern Biotechnology” and two safety assessment guidelines: “Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods derived from Recombinant-DNA Plants”; “Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods produced using Recombinant-DNA Microorganisms”. These documents were adopted by the Commission in July 2003 as final texts, and have been used by a number of countries as international reference.
(a) Codex Principles for Risk Analysis of Foods derived from Modern Biotechnology (CAC/GL 44-2003)
An overarching framework for undertaking risk analysis on the safety and nutritional aspect of foods derived from biotechnology
(b) Codex Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Plants (CAC/GL 45-2003)
A guideline, based on the above principles, for conducting safety assessments specifically for foods derived from recombinant-DNA plants
(c) Codex Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Microorganisms (CAC/GL 46-2003)
A guideline, based on the principles, for conducting safety assessments specifically for foods derived from recombinant-DNA microorganisms
