Phytophthora sojae infects cultivated soybean (Glycine max) and Glycine soja. P. sojae causes root and stem rot at all reproductive stages of growth. Infections typically occur after heavy rains on poorly drained soils. Root extudates from the host attract P. sojae, which will then penetrate the root cortex and form oospores. Later in infection, stem cankers, wilting and chlorosis will become apparent and lead to the death of the plant. The oospores allow the pathogen to survive in soil and plant debris.
