The stacked maize line SYN-Ø53Ø7-1 x MON-ØØØ21-9 was obtained through the traditional cross breading of each of the parental organisms to produce a maize that expresses each of EPSPS, pmi and eCry3.1Ab genes. The expression of these genes are expected to confer resistance to Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, and tolerant to glyphosate herbicide.

The 5-enolpyruvyl shikimate-3-phosphate synthase (epsps) gene from maize was modified through site-directed mutagenesis, such that its encoded enzyme was insensitive to inactivation by glyphosate. The resulting gene was used to develop GA21
